It works by binding to estrogen receptors, blocking estrogen\u2019s effects in some tissues while mimicking its effects in others. In breast tissue, tamoxifen citrate blocks estrogen from binding to its receptors, which may prevent the growth of cancer cells. Tamoxifen citrate mimics estrogen\u2019s effects in bone tissue, which may reduce bone resorption and turnover and increase bone mineral density.<\/p>\n<p id=\"_2\" tabindex=\"-1\">Tamoxifen citrate is approved to treat:<\/p>\n<ul id=\"_4\">\n<li><strong>Breast cancer<\/strong>\u00a0in women and men. It is used:\n<ul id=\"_7\">\n<li>in patients whose cancer has spread to other parts of the body<\/li>\n<li>as\u00a0adjuvant therapy\u00a0in women whose cancer was treated with surgery and\u00a0radiation therapy<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ductal carcinoma in situ<\/strong>\u00a0(DCIS).
